What is going on in some people's heads?
Yesterday I read what was really heartbreaking news on facebook.
So che ho parlato prima di loro qui sul blog.... ma quello che ho letto ieri secondo me vale la pena essere scritto.
Giuliana e Bill.
Come cavolo pensano a dire queste cose?
I know I've mentioned them before here on the blog...but what I read yesterday really is worth a mention.
Giuliana and Bill. They lost their first baby early in Giuliana's pregnancy. She then had breast cancer but so desperately wanted a child so they decided to chose a surrogate mother. They had their second baby Duke. Baby Duke is nearly 2 years old and they decided they wanted to have another child and give Duke a brother or sister. Sadly their surrogate mother had a miscarage.
Giuliana and Bill are devastated. So is the surrogate mother.
Bill repeated what he had said in the first pregnancy. They were nearly in the 12 week safety zone. We all know there is no such thing.
But thing that started getting my blood to boil were the comments people were leaving. like: you can have more one on one time with baby Duke. Have you thought about adopting? You'll have another baby soon. Don't adopt, dont let strange blood into your family..... chose a younger surrogate mother.
I swear I don't understand what goes on in people's mind! How would you say such things?
When I lost Thea I heard lots of stupid things. I honestly thought that is was due to ignorance. All to do with people from the south of Sicily. Not wanting to be racist or anything..... I just thought that seen as though we are quite behind on things.... about 20 years behind..... it was the excuse I gave. But these people are American..... they are from Great Britain. How the hell do they even think of these things to say?
Now I understand that the whole world in a very small place....a bit too small!

Pasqua.... Easter...
Emozionante.
Da tre anni mi chiedo....perchè io no?
Even this third Easter without Thea has passed.
I live in a small Sicilian village. Every Easter there is what is called the "invontro" (meeting). It's a religious festival that's very beautiful and emotional to watch. Everytime..... in these three years I seem to empathize with the characters. The statue of S. Michele is carried on shoulder and goes from The statue of Christ Risen to the Virgin Mary telling her that her son is alive. He does it three times. In the end the Virgin Mary believes him and the statues of the Virgin Mary and Christ Risen on shoulder start to run from the two exstramities for a long street to then meet in the middle of it. The Virgin Mary has a black cape, seeing her son she takes off her black cape and has a beautiful light blue one underneath. They meet.... mother and son.... they make their statues"dance". It's emotional. It had been three years that I ask myself.... why not me? I know..... I could never compare myself to the Virgin Mary. Thea could never be campared to Jesus...... but I want what they have. That resurection.....I would wnat to have it. I would like to find Thea alive running at my open arms to never let her go.

martedì 1 aprile 2014
E' da un po' che ci penso. I've been thinking about it for a while.
Poi penso a me.
Certo i miei figli soffrivano vedere me piangere e soffrire.
Mamma imperfetta.
I've been thinking about what I've read on the internet. I've read it quite a lot really.
I'm talking about the way some babyloss parents don't want to cry in front of their children. Maybe because they don't want to upset them. Maybe because seeing mummy crying in front of them is also a sort of tabu'. Mummy has to show her children that she doesn't suffer and that she is strong. It makes my heart go tender thinking that a mother has to grieve ...... in little installments. What a mother doesn't do to not make her children suffer!
I then think about me. About my personal story. About they way I am, about my children and the way I was with them when I lost Thea.
I didn't save them from my tears. They saw me without a smile on my face for at least 6 months. I didn't go out even when they asked me to. When they asked me why I was crying I would tell them that I miss your little sister and that's why I can't stop crying.
I have been thinking about how I was. I think about the way I was with them. Maybe I was egoistic. I looked at my needs. I did what I felt like doing. I wasn't thinking about what their reactions could have been at seeing me cry.
Now I ask myself if I did right following my instinct and reacted in this way.
Well..... my answer is a timid Yes! I think I did right. Yes my children did suffer seeing me cry and in pain. Seeing that mother figure that they thought invinceable ..... be nulled..... But what they saw was the truth. Life. They saw how it can be cruel..... they saw how some things can really hurt. That not everything is beautiful and we don't always smile.
They really began to suffer when they first knew that their little sister was gone forever. My tears were just a confirmation for them that we react badly after a bad thing happens to us.
They then saw their mummy remember their little sister in every way she possibly could. They also took part in that in a very natural and not forced into it way. They saw their mummy slowly picking herself up. That slowly started to smile again. Even they learnt to see hearts, butterflies and angles everywhere. I see them looking at the sky every now and then. I wonder if they're talking to Thea as I do. They have seen that after a storm the sun comes out and it makes a rainbow. They don't know what a rainbow baby is.... and I'm not talking about that kind of rainbow. What I'm talking about is life.... at that way of looking at things in colour instead of that dull grey that has kept me company for a long time.
I also thought ..... how could my children be with their friends? What if one of their friends or someone they know loses a baby in pregnancy, what would my children say? "You're esagerated! why are you crying so much? The same thing happened to my mum and she didn't make such a fuss!" or "It happened to my mum. She cryed so much. I'm so sorry. I know what it's like to lose someone this way. I'm here for you."
I really hope my little men will feel it in their hearts to say the second part. I really hope they don't ever have to say it.... but if life puts them on the path of who needs them I hope that they will hold out their hand and will offer their shoulder to cry on.
An Imperfect Mother.

25 Marzo, 3 anni. 25th March 3 years.
Even this year we remembered our little Thea. 3 years WITH and WITHOUT her.
I was recieved lots of messages on Facebook .... it was nice to recieve lots of messages and "likes". Lots of private messages too. It was as if everytime I got one ... all of those people made her ALIVE!.
One thing that made me slightly uncomfortable was recieving messages of admiration and od esteem. I don't understand if it was because of what I had done to remember Thea or for what had happened to me.
Giuseppe and I spoke about it .... we don't think we did anything that was ecceptional. We "only" remembered Thea. She was, is and always will be with us. We remember her in this way because it comes from our heart, because she's a parte of us and because it makes us feel closer to her. We thought that it's not that we're special.... it's that others are afraid because losing a baby and remembering it is still a tabu'.

I wonder if when I posted this to facebook people understood the message I wanted to give.
"Lei C'E' anche se non si vede!"
"She'S HERE even if you can't see her!"
WE ARE FAMILY!

During Thea's pregnancy we were thinking about doing up the house.
We only had one room for the children. Even if it's quite big we didn't think it was big enough for all three.
Our house wasn't that comfortable anyway having to go into one room to get to the next. We thought that we would get the builders in and make things comfortable for our family of 5.
We even gave ourselves a time limit. As soon as Thea was one we would start the building work.
Now all of you know what happened. We didn't need another room. Not at all My little men could stay in there room and divide the big space between them. After a few years of our great loss I couldn't bear to stay in the same places were I returned as soon as Thea wasn't with us. I used to go into our bedroom. The first thought I used ALWAYS have was the day I came back from the hospital without Thea. There wasn't anything of hers, everything was put away and hidden. I needed a change.
We decided we were going to make the same changes we thought we would for Thea's arrival. The room we thought would be Thea's would have become one of the boys room.
Last year in April the cahnges began. We gave a new look to our house, we changed the aspect .... but the heart of our home stayed the same.
Luca now sleeps in the room that was going to be Thea's. He choose the furniture. He decided how he wanted it to be pianted. He wanted ceiling to be light blue like the sky with clouds. We did the clouds.... in these clouds there was a "baby in a bump" shape, a heart shape and angle wings. I'm happy that he choose to have a sky in his room. I sometimes go in there.... I go on the bed and look at that sky and feel close to Thea.
....... between sky and earth......
We needed the change. We needed a little turning.
She was there before the changes.... and she's here now..... our house will always be full of her!

Ciao Marzo... Hello March
Ciao Marzo. Bentornato.
Hello March. Welcome back.
Three years ago ... we got a phone call. our friends. They were going to celebrate their daughters first birthday. I had a really big bump. I was slightly annoyed because whatever I wore wasn't right..... but I went to the party anyway.
The party entertainer see me arriving in all my splendor! She asks me the usual questions. When is it due..... if I know the sex..... what are we going to call it? I knew .... I wasn't going to tell her though! Throughout the party there were lots of games. Games for grown ups more so than for the children. Whilst eating she says ...."lets have a draw to help these parents pick a name for their child! Everyone will write a name on a piece of paper and big brother Luca will pick one out of a hat!"
out comes the name Caterina.
The same phone call arrives today inviting us to the same birthday.
The day after tomorrow we'll all be there like three years ago.... no bump and no name this time....
